The double lift
Understand what this foundational card technique is for, and how to study it responsibly.
What it does
A double lift displays two cards as though they were one. Its usefulness depends on the display looking like an ordinary single-card action, not on speed.
Before you learn it
Get comfortable turning a single card face up and face down on a squared deck. Notice your grip, tempo, and the angle of the card to the audience. These ordinary actions are your baseline.
A practice plan
Study one handling from a legitimate beginner course, rather than assembling fragments from unrelated performances. Practice slowly in a mirror from the audience’s viewpoint. Then practice without the mirror, so your eyes do not become fixed on your hands.
Quality checks
- Is the turnover rhythm the same as your normal single-card turnover?
- Are the edges aligned?
- Can you return to a relaxed grip without fiddling?
- Can you say your line naturally while doing it?
This page is a study guide, not a technical tutorial. Use a full course for the mechanics and exercises, and avoid lifting another magician’s routine along with the move.
